Over the past few years, there has been a huge switch from traditional incandescent light bulbs to new LED light bulbs. This comes as no surprise, since LED bulbs are much more cost efficient, using just 10% of the electricity that traditional incandescent bulbs use. Furthermore, they are more environment friendly, as they can be fully recycled and are free from mercury and other hazardous substances.

Although the initial cost of LED light bulbs is relatively high, they have a much longer life expectancy than other bulbs, making it an investment that pays off. Only having to replace bulbs every 5 years or so is also a convenient benefit.

While traditional bulbs can produce a lot of light, they are very inefficient and actually spend around 85% of their energy generating heat. By contrast, LED bulbs remain cool, so very little energy is wasted. This means that electricity bills can be greatly reduced by switching to LED light bulbs, with savings up to several hundred pounds per year.

LED bulbs use the same light fittings as other bulb types, so there are no issues with compatibility. One of the most common bulb types is the GU10 LED bulb. This is the most common light fitting in UK households, and although the initial cost is several times that of a halogen light, low running costs and a long life ensure that it is money that is soon recouped.
In this day and age, there are always news articles discussing global warming and what we can do to reduce our carbon footprint. Switching to LED light bulbs is one way to help, and if we save a few quid in the process, who can argue.
