What is LED Lighting?

The past few years has seen an exponential rise in the use of LED lighting. This pattern can be seen in all sectors, from domestic use to commercial and industrial applications. But how exactly does LED lighting work? Here you will find a brief introduction to LED light bulbs.

An LED light bulb is made up of a series of small Light emitting diodes placed next to each other. It is common to have around 20 LEDs in a single bulb, combining to create a significant amount of light. They are much more efficient than filament based lights, which means they are much cheaper to run.

LED light bulbs last much longer than all other forms of lighting and are commonly quoted as lasting up to 50,000 hours. In reality, we have found this number to be quite modest, as many bulbs have lasted around twice this amount. This huge lifespan has made LED lighting ideal for any situation where bulbs may not be replaced regularly. Examples of this include traffic signals and commercial sign lighting. In addition, their low carbon footprint and use of eco-friendly materials makes them even more appealing in the face of the global pressure to reduce carbon emissions.

In addition to these clear benefits, LED lights also have some features that appeal to designers and engineers. Firstly, LED lights can produce coloured light without the use of a filter. As they are made from several small LEDs, it is possible to use several colours at once to produce some interesting colour effects.  Secondly, LED lights produce very little heat.  This is a huge benefit for situations where heat is unacceptable or can produce a fire risk.
